A LIGHT MERIDIAN IN THE LANDSCAPE

the 2.5 hectare zilverberg site in zuid-roeselare includes the ‘old zilverberg’ archeological site, a number of parcels of land for artistic outdoor activities, and the muz’eumL: ‘Light and Landscape’ // at 03°07’45” to the east of the greenwich meridian (0° longitude), an imaginary north-south line passes through the zilverberg site // this line of longitude is visualised as a straight green line of vegetation in the landscape and then as a shaft of sunlight cutting straight through an architectural monument: a light line // after passing through muze’umL, its amphitheatre and the zilverberg site, this ‘light meridian’ goes on to cross seas and oceans, europe (belgium, france, spain), north africa and antarctica and then the entire pacific ocean on the other side of the globe, close to the date line // the LM passes through some very special landscapes in europe.

A LIGHT MERIDIAN BISECTING A LIGHT MUZE’UM 

a long, white building no taller than a man lies on a green hillside // a sloping corridor frames the sky as it leads you down // architectural and landscaping interventions frame successive segments of the natural world outside // a longitudinal cleft in the roof allows a shaft of sunlight to enter and draw the meridian as a line of light // every day at the solar noon, when the sun is at its highest point, the sun is for a short time directly above this light meridian and throws a perpendicular line of light // one hour before and after noon fantastic geometrical patterns of sunlight cross the patio // observers who see this at just the right moment will be struck with amazement and wonder // of course, this phenomenon can only be experienced when the sun is shining
